Art and design
In the words of Pablo Picasso, ‘Every Child is an Artist’. As such, at Stone Hill School a high-quality Art and Design curriculum is fundamental to our pupils’ education.
Through a broad and balanced range of topics, our curriculum encourages pupils to think, feel and behave as artists. During their time at school, our pupils develop proficiency in key disciplines including drawing, painting and sculpture. These are introduced through clearly sequenced lessons designed to support progression over time so that pupils know, do and remember more about Art.
The Art and Design curriculum has been created with our pupils at its heart. The themes and activities chosen are dynamic and adapted to meet the needs and interests of our school community. The curriculum is designed with meaningful links to subjects such as Humanities, Design Technology and Science, ensuring that our pupils are able to make connections in their learning and apply their knowledge across contexts.
Each topic in the Art and Design curriculum focuses on significant artists from all walks of life. These artists have been chosen to encourage our pupils to view life through different cultural lenses and to celebrate diversity in all of its forms. Pupils learn that Art is for everyone and, in doing so, find the courage to express themselves creatively.
Art and Design is therapeutic by nature. Through a range of interactive activities and multisensory approaches, our curriculum aims to inspire pupils to be curious and take creative risks. It supports pupil well-being and fosters self-confidence, resilience and communication; attributes invaluable for life-long learning and employment. As many of our pupils learn through experience, our curriculum has a strong focus on enrichment, providing opportunities for pupils to engage outside of the classroom in workshops, galleries and museum visits.
Adapted from the National Curriculum, Art and Design lessons at Stone Hill School intend to be inspiring and aspirational for all pupils. In Lower School, the curriculum introduces pupils to basic concepts, such as colour, shape, pattern and texture, setting a solid foundation for the Upper School curriculum. In KS3, pupils generate ideas, make and evaluate. They are encouraged to explore themes in greater depth and develop informed responses to these. By KS4, pupils are able to think critically about artwork, explore with greater autonomy and refine their ideas. Pupils apply their skills and knowledge to achieve the Arts Award Bronze qualification.
