Design & Technology
Design and Technology is a creative, practical and imaginative subject. As such, at Stone Hill School we know that a high-quality DT curriculum is fundamental to our pupils’ education.
Through broad and balanced topics, our curriculum encourages pupils to think, feel and behave as designers. During their time at school, our pupils develop knowledge of key themes including mechanical systems, structures and textiles. Pupils also gain practical skills thus enabling them to make products to solve real problems, in a range of relevant contexts. These are introduced through clearly sequenced lessons which support progression over time, so that pupils know, do and remember more about DT.
The DT curriculum has been created with our pupils at its heart. The themes and activities chosen are dynamic and adapted to meet the needs and interests of our school community. The curriculum is designed around links to subjects such as Humanities, Art, IT and Science, ensuring that our pupils are able to make meaningful connections in their learning, and apply their knowledge across contexts.
Our DT curriculum ensures that pupils develop an understanding of past and present design and technology, gaining a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Pupils are taught about inspirational designers, makers and engineers from all walks of life.
DT is practical by nature; it fosters pupil well-being and personal development. By taking part in practical tasks in the workshop, our pupils become confident in using a range of tools and machines safely. They are encouraged to be resourceful, innovative and enterprising; attributes invaluable for life-long learning and employment. As many of our pupils learn through experience our curriculum has a strong focus on enrichment, providing pupils with opportunities to take risks outside of the classroom and work in partnership with community groups.
Adapted from the National Curriculum, Design and Technology lessons at Stone Hill School intend to be inspiring and aspirational for all pupils. In Lower School, the curriculum introduces pupils to basic skills and knowledge, setting a solid foundation for the Upper School curriculum. In KS3, pupils are introduced to the DT workshop. They design, make and evaluate functional and appealing products for specific audiences. By KS4, pupils are able to work with greater independence and confidence. They refine and apply their skills to complete Prince’s Trust modules, gaining an invaluable insight into DT in the workplace.
