Food Technology

Food Technology Intent

The Food Technology curriculum at Stone Hill school, is designed to be progressive, building on skills and knowledge, from an early age. The curriculum equips pupils with the confidence to make healthier choices and provides the necessary life skills to support Health and Wellbeing. This contributes to pupils maintaining a healthy weight and good oral hygiene.  As well as Health and Wellbeing, Food Technology has many other cross curricular links, including English, Maths, Life skills, Science and RE. We would like our pupils to have the skills and confidence to experiment with food as a creative craft, leading to a lifelong appreciation of and interest in foods from all cultures.

Our pupils will develop a broad range of knowledge, including the importance of nutrition and the function of food in maintaining a healthy body. They will be taught the importance of hygiene and safety, in keeping food safe. Pupils will also learn important skills such as time management, the ability to multi task, working with others, decision-making, attention to detail, economical budgeting and food origins. Pupils will be encouraged to analyse, discuss, describe and evaluate their dishes through a variety of verbal and written formats and evidence their outcome with photographs.

Teachers coordinate and direct pupils to be able to work both independently and as integral parts of larger teams. Teachers model professional working relationships, to enable them to learn to work under direction in a fast paced productive environment and to enthuse pupils with a desire to explore the potential of food in their lives and as a career.

Fundamentally, we want pupils to be able to work in a safe and organised manner and be confident enough to make informed decisions to promote good diet and health. Pupils will be able to apply a wide range of culinary skills and make a diverse range of dishes/meals independently. By years 10 and 11, students are assessed independently creating dishes that they are proud of.
