Independent Life Skills Curriculum at Stone Hill School

Our curriculum intent is to,

  • Ensure every pupil will leave with recognised accreditations, certifications, qualifications, and social skills that will provide them with a solid platform to go onto further education or employment.

  • Ensure Life Skills will be taught every day to foster independent living, employability, healthy living, and participation in society.

At Stone Hill we aim for all our pupils and young people to develop life/functional skills so each of them is able to lead a fulfilling and, to varying degrees, independent life; depending on the young person’s needs.  We recognise that for young people with special needs every experience provides an opportunity to learn.  To this end, Life Skills is taught both explicitly (as a curricular lesson) and implicitly (across all subjects in the curriculum and through our wider learning opportunities).  It is embedded throughout the curriculum, with Life Skills outcomes linked meaningfully to programmes of study and schemes of work.

Whether it be learning to use a knife and fork or tying shoe laces, developing financial capability or staying safe on the internet, road safety or learning to hoover, making a bed or a cup of tea, or keeping safe in the community, our pupils will be given the opportunity to practise and learn these lifelong skills.

The Autism Education Trust (AET) Progression Framework has been adapted to provide a Life Skills assessment framework for measuring progress.  Learning is dynamic and responsive to the young person’s progress and development, the programme is a broad framework within which each child learns. The pathways will be determined by each individual’s:

  • EHCP outcomes

  • EHCP targets

  • Strengths and areas for personal development

  • Needs as assessed by the parents, staff, therapists, professionals and where possible, the pupil.

Our Life Skills curriculum includes ample opportunities for pupils and young people to develop life skills through experiencing daily activities in school as well as extracurricular visits and experiences (for example, our Stepping Out & Independent travel training programmes).  Our approach builds our pupils’ independence, social understanding and allows them to use and practice their knowledge in every day, practical situations.
