Music Curriculum Intent

Music can be accessed by all pupils across school, independently and in groups. Our music curriculum is designed to engage and inspire pupils using their creative thinking skills to give them a sense of achievement. Pupils will also develop their independence and self-confidence skills that can be transferred to other aspects of life.

The national curriculum for music across Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians;

  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and be able to progress to the next level of musical excellence;

  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

At Stone Hill school we will focus on four key areas in each lesson. These are:

  • Musical appreciation - Pupils will listen to a variety of musical genres and be encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions.

  • Musical Activities – Pupils will learn the inter-related dimensions of music through fun and engaging activities. They will also have access to a range of percussion instruments as well as guitars and keyboards.

  • Composition – Pupils will be encouraged to explore and express their own ideas and represent these in a way suitable to their ability.

  • Performance – Pupils will share and celebrate their achievements with their peers in class and with others across school. They will also experience what it is like to be an audience member when visiting musicians perform in school.

Music is included throughout other curriculum areas. Listening to music from all over the world links to Humanities. More commonly we use songs to help remember and support our learning, particularly in Maths and Literacy. Each year group will use Charanga, a website that uses a range of activities to support our curriculum. We also have a specialist guitar teacher who provides 1:1 and group lessons for our pupils.

Pupils have opportunities to showcase their work across Doncaster at a range of local events as well as in school during assemblies and, especially, our Christmas performances. We work alongside Live Music Now and Doncaster Music Hub with experienced musical specialists that provide fantastic opportunities for our pupils.

Our music curriculum intends for pupils to have enjoy themselves as well as taking part, trying their best and having a go. Assessment happens through teacher observations of pupils during lessons, performances and recordings of their achievements and evidence is tracked using our school assessment system.
