Physical Education Curriculum: Intent

Our inclusive PE curriculum is based on the national curriculum and is adapted to meet the individual needs of all pupils. The use of adapted resources and equipment, and our highly skilled staff ensures barriers to learning are overcome. Through effective and personalised challenge and goal setting, personal and physical milestones are achieved.

Our Physical Education curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to learn how to lead healthy lifestyles. Moving through key stages, pupils will develop physical skills and, equally as important, confidence, social skills and self-belief. At the start of their journey in Lower School, pupils learn a range of fundamental and fine motor skills. Our wide range of physical activities promote life-long participation in sport and exercise, developing leadership and team work skills. This allows our children to experience individual and team-based sports, working cooperatively to develop team work and leadership skills.

Encouraging lifelong participation in sport helps to challenge and promote self-esteem. This is delivered through ensuring our pupils access physical education, sport and leisure in the community. Pupils experience the transition process into the community through taking part in real life sports and exercise experiences, building the knowledge and skills they will need to independently participate on leaving Stone Hill School.

Our pupils are inspired as they learn about sporting topics and national events, driving them to want to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities. Opportunities for pupils to collaborate and compete against other year groups and schools is provided across the school, allowing skills to be practised and developed in different contexts thus supporting a mastery approach.

We celebrate sporting achievements and raise awareness of good sporting examples set by individual pupils and also our leadership qualification groups. Our whole school approach is interactive and inclusive for all pupils, enabling a collaborative learning environment.
